Job Description

Responsible for developing the liturgical, pastoral, spiritual, and faith community life on campus, as well as designing and implementing a comprehensive campus ministry enrollment program, in keeping with the mission of Briar Cliff University and the Catholic church in higher education. Pastoral Provide access to spiritual resources for all students in support of their faith (this also includes opportunities and schedules for those also who are not Catholic). Serve as a prayer leader for various campus functions and provide for a variety of non-Eucharistic prayer experiences as needed. Provide and coordinate opportunities for ongoing faith development through retreats as well as other prayer experiences. Coordinate the RCIA program/rituals on campus and serve as core catechist. Provide for bible study/faith sharing groups and train peer leaders. Provide notification and any spiritual services required in the event of a death or illness of a BCU student, employee, or their family members. Publish special requests from students/personnel for prayer for sick or deceased members of their families; send sympathy note to student/personnel when someone in their family dies; visit sick members of BCU community who are hospitalized; attend wakes/funerals when possible. Respond to crises on campus for students/staff as a pastoral care person. Provide spiritual direction and/or pastoral counseling or support to all BCU community members as requested. Provide vocational discernment opportunities; assist students & staff with faith & personal issues. Be a supportive presence at student/employee activities, talks, choral concerts, athletic events and visit informally in cafeteria and residence halls. Liturgical/Pastoral: Coordinate decorating of the worship space for liturgical seasons and for special events and the maintenance of plants, etc. Coordinate scheduling of all services in chapel and set up for weekly Masses. Offer opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (weekly confession times and Lenten Communal Penance Service). Schedule and coordinate planning of special liturgies such as: Opening School Mass, St. Francis Day, Holy Days of Obligation, Ash Wednesday and Baccalaureate Mass Assist with all rituals for events such as Threshold ceremony for orientation of new students; Nurses Pinning Ceremony; White Coat ceremony of DPT students; Hooding of DPT students; Memorial Vigils etc. Maintain vestments and liturgical objects in chapel, order supplies; and the cleaning of chapel items such as purificators/altar linens/albs & candles. Service/Mission Outreach: Serve as a liaison with the Diocese of Sioux City. Help foster relationships with local parishes and priests throughout the Diocese Support Enrollment Management in efforts to recruit students of Catholic faith. Seek to understand important patterns and research tied to faith formation of young adults. Coordinate all details for yearly Mission/Service Trips in January and assist with Spring Break trips. Centralize information regarding community service opportunities (on and off campus) for the University Promote, encourage, and support community service carried out by any existing student groups, organization, or academic department Coordinate events that provide outreach to the external community in ways that emphasize Catholic and Franciscan values. Assist with New Student Orientation days in the fall and the orientation of DPT students in the summer. Assist Admissions personnel in visit days and meet regularly with visiting students & their parents who have an interest in campus ministry activities. Administrative Oversee the Campus Ministry budget and purchase of supplies as well as special accounts such as Sunday collections and student organization accounts. Pay monthly stipends of priests/musicians. Coordinate updating of brochures & web information. Serve on the Baccalaureate and Commencement Committees. Serve as a member of the Management Council. Serve as member of the Crisis Management Team and as a confidential person for Title 9 cases. Participate in the Iowa Catholic Campus Ministry Association and attend professional meetings. Compile the quarterly Board of Trustees Report for Campus Ministry. Coordinate updating of Campus Ministry social media. Maintain contact with the Diocesan Office in any liturgical celebrations and pastoral issues. Collaborate to provide professional development opportunities for employees to deepen their understanding of the Gospel, teachings of the Catholic Church, and the Franciscan charism. Respond to other duties/committee work as needed for the good of the University. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Master's degree (M.A.) in theology/religious education or its equivalent preferred; three-five years related experience and/or training preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must understand and support the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, including moral and pastoral teachings. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse and multi-cultural community; students, faculty, staff and the larger public. Flexibility to work independently and as a member of a team to efficiently to meet deadlines. Knowledge of academic environments, particularly higher education. Ability to make administrative/ procedural judgments and recommendations. Outstanding interpersonal relational skills and, excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to network with local volunteer agencies and build relationships within and outside the campus environment.

Professional appearance and demeanor with attention to detail, excellent interpersonal, and strong supervisory and organizational skills with the ability to manage and develop staff. Works frequently with confidential information requiring discretion and integrity. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with others, including good listening skills and a compassionate heart. Ability to review and evaluate programs for effectiveness with a strategic and intentional approach. Availability in the evening and weekend hours.
